BEST ISEKAI ANIME TV SERIES

1. That time I got reincarnated as a slime (2018-Present):

This light novel series that was adapted into anime in 2018 is the story of Satoru Mikami, a 37-year-old corporate worker from Tokyo who is happy with his monotonous life, without ever knowing love. During a normal encounter with his colleague, an unknown person shows up from nowhere and stabs him. Before dying, Satoru hears a mysterious voice that recites a series of commands that he does not understand. After regaining consciousness, he realises that he has been reincarnated as a slime with new found skills, in a world not of his own.

While this does sound quirky, Satoru with the help of his skills navigates the unfamiliar world, with his newfound powers he quickly becomes one of the strongest beings in this new world and with the help of the monsters he’s met along the way, he builds a nation of his own in the Great Forest of Jura called “Tempest” and names himself as ‘Rimuru Tempest’, eventually gaining the trust of other nations that are afraid of Tempest due to the residents being monsters.

This anime has a lot of action-packed scenes and different type of creatures with unique personalities, and the most lovable pet wolves. This show is known for having memorable characters and more than one protagonist. The show has completed two seasons as of 2021, with the third one on the way during winter 2022.

2. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (2021-):

This anime is about a 34-year-old unnamed Japanese man who concludes that his life is completely pointless, and yet throws himself in front of a moving truck to save some teenagers in an attempt to do something meaningful in his life and manages to save one before getting injured and dying.

With his memories intact, the man awakens in a baby’s body in a world of swords and sorcery and strives to be successful in his new life as Rudeus Greyrat. Because of his inherited affinity for magic and early training by his father, Rudeus becomes extremely skilled at magic, outshining the teacher who was hired to teach him. He sets off to achieve great things, but faces many obstacles in his path.

The show started airing in January 2021, and quickly gained popularity to be considered one of the best. While the show does have a fair share of scenes leaning towards adult content, the show is popular because of its story. As of now, the second season of the anime is on air, with more on the way.

3. The Rising of the Shield Hero (2019-Present):

Written by Aneko Yusagi, this dark fantasy isekai light novel series turned to anime is the story of Naofumi Iwatani, an average teenager from Japan who gets summoned into a parallel world along with three other boys from other parallel worlds to become the world’s Cardinal Heroes. The world they are summoned into, is riddled with ‘Catastrophe Waves’ that summon inter-dimensional hordes of monsters destroying their worlds.

Each of the cardinal heroes is equipped with a legendary weapon which is the only one they can use, our protagonist happens to be summoned with a shield, while the others receive a bow, a sword and a spear. Unlike the other heroes, the hero of the shield is hated by the kingdom Naofumi is summoned in, and hence worsens his luck when he teams up with the princess of the nation who betrays him accusing him of sexually assaulting her.

Insulted by the elites of the kingdom, Naofumi is forced to walk his path of being the Shield Hero alone, helping out the people of the kingdom who despise him until he finds a way to clear his name. He manages to make a few companions who help him along the way to become the strongest of the cardinal heroes to save the kingdom that mocked him.

This show is one of the best anime, not just in the Isekai genre, with completing its first season in 2019, the second season is scheduled to air in April 2022, the release date was postponed from October 2021 to 2022 due to COVID. Fans are eager to see what the show brings next.

4. GATE (2015-2016):

Moving away from the general Isekai stories, a portal from another world suddenly appears in a modern-day Tokyo, and a small army of Roman-like medieval soldiers and monsters emerge and start attacking the city. Our protagonist Yōji Itami, a reserve officer of the JSDF (Japan Self-Defense Forces) acts quickly to save a few civilians before the JSDF shows up with their weaponry to push back and kill the invaders.

Our protagonist, along with a platoon of officers are sent to the world of magic, dragons and elves via the portal the invaders came from in order to establish their base and initiate peace negotiations with the Empire of the said magic world.

The anime follows the journey of the soldiers in the other world as they struggle to communicate with their residents and help out in the civil wars that emerge due to their arrival, on the other hand, the rest of the world is envied to the fact that Japan has exclusive access to the other world and its resources and that they cannot exploit it for their own countries.

The show has many action-packed sequences with the Japanese soldiers fighting everything from bandits to mythical creatures like dragons. The anime had it’s run from 2015 to 2016 with 2 seasons and 24 episodes, while the light novel that is the continuation of the anime is still on going since its debut in 2017.

5. Re: Zero – Starting Life in Another World (2016-Present)

This anime written by Tappei Nagatsuki, entails the story of Subaru Natsuki, an introvert who finds himself transported to a different world out of nowhere on his way home from the convenience store.

Just as he is exploring the new world after his arrival, he is killed after trying to help a young half-elf named Emilia, only to be revived a few hours in the past. After dying quite a few times, he realises that he has the power to turn back time, an extremely overpowered ability that seems to work only after he has died.

After successfully saving the half elf he manages to move forward with his life only to die at different places and be resurrected to the time after he saved Emilia. Subaru, with his newfound ability makes it his mission to protect Emilia and help her become the new queen.

With a powerful ability, that has extreme drawbacks, Subaru is faced with a lot of challenges in his journey of helping Emilia, as he uses his ability to help others while suffering extreme pain every time he dies and keeps his memories of everything that happens before time is reversed, no one else remembers but him.

The anime has had two seasons aired since its debut with a renewal for third season, the date of which is yet to be announced.

6. The Devil is a Part Timer (2013-Present)

A Japanese light novel series written by Satoshi Wagahara, this anime follows the story of the Demon Lord Satan and his evil forces from another dimension, as he is defeated by the Hero Emilia and her army. Backed into a corner, Satan and his general Alsiel flee via a portal that lands them in modern day Japan, the hero Emilia follows them into the portal as well, being away from the world they know, their magic power starts depleting and they are forced to live as ordinary humans in a world unfamiliar to them to survive.

This reverse-isekai situation creates for a lot of hilarious moments in the anime, as the Demon Lord Satan starts working as a part timer in McRonalds while the hero Emilia starts working at a call centre. Being the evil ruler that Emilia remembers the Satan to be, she resents the Demon Lord who seems to be a carefree part time worker, though many situations they are thrown into make them unlikely allies in order to survive.

This show is one of the funniest anime to ever exist, with its light hearted comedy and extremely likable “evil characters”, the show becomes extremely memorable, even for people who might watch it to have something on during eating.

With one season completed back in 2013, fans had lost hope of its renewal, until March 2021 when Funanimation announced the second season for the anime out of the blue, much to the delight and surprise of the fans, the release date for the second season is yet to be announced and is eagerly expected.

7. KonoSuba (2016-Present)

Created by Natsume Akatsuki, this anime follows Kazuma Satō, a shut-in teenager, who meets an untimely and embarrassing death, meets a goddess in the afterlife named Aqua, who offers to reincarnate him in a world of swords and magic where he can go on adventures and battle monsters.

Even though he is offered superpowered magical abilities or extremely powerful weapons to help him in his quest of defeating the demon lord of the world, following a lot of mocking by the goddess, he chooses the goddess Aqua herself to accompany him in the world he is teleported into, but later finds the goddess to be absent-minded and basically useless.

Since the goddess is unable to return to the afterlife without defeating the demon king, she reluctantly forms a party with Kazuma and recruits two other members, a magician obsessed with explosions named Megumin and a crusader named Darkness who is a masochist.

Given that the dynamic of Kazuma’s party is so dysfunctional, he gives up on his aim of defeating the demon king and instead welcomes the idea of living a comfortable life in the world he has been reincarnated into, however the circumstances of his daily life always lead his party to fight with the generals of the Demon King.

Started back in 2016, the anime has completed two seasons and a movie in 2019, the anime has been renewed for a third season, but the information on its release is yet to be disclosed.

Honourable Mention:

The World’s Finest Assassin gets reincarnated in another world as an aristocrat (2021-):

This anime has started airing in fall 2021 and has only 3 episodes released till date (20.10.2021), but the potential of this anime and the production value suggests that it will be one of the more famous and top anime in no time.

The show follows the story of an old man who had lived his life has a trained assassin, and the world’s greatest at that, due to his age he decides to retire but is killed by the organisation he worked for, as he dies, he is awakened by a goddess who offers him a choice between starting a new life as a fresh soul or reincarnating in a fantasy world with his memories with the sole purpose of assassinating the hero of said world.

So far, the plot of the anime is still shaping up, but it is a promising anime with a lot of thrill in the upcoming episodes.
